Foothills & Villages: A Scenic Ride Around Vrisinas Mountain and Amari Valley

Our adventure begins as we head towards the tranquil west coast of Rethymno city, leaving the bustle of the city behind as we embark on a gentle climb south. We quickly leave the busy streets of Rethymno, heading onto quiet, nature-filled roads that wind around the stunning Vrisinas Mountain (elevation 858 meters), offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape as we cycle through peaceful villages.

Our first stop is the picturesque Armenoi Village, a peaceful settlement known for its traditional stone houses and olive groves. Here, we’ll pause for a refreshing coffee before we continue to explore the village’s narrow streets and visit the Olive Press Museum, where we’ll learn about the island’s ancient olive oil production methods.

Continuing the loop around Vrisinas Mountain, we ride through some of the most peaceful roads, surrounded by lush greenery, and pass through small, tranquil villages that seem untouched by time. After the serene climb, we are treated to a breathtaking descent toward the Amari Valley, where we can marvel at the stunning views of the valley floor below.

This spectacular descent leads us to Amari Dam and its sparkling reservoir. The area, encircled by dramatic landscapes, provides the perfect backdrop for scenic photography as we ride the peaceful roads around the reservoir.

After soaking in the beauty of this natural gem, we take a well-deserved break at a family-owned taverna, where a light, traditional Cretan lunch awaits to recharge our energy. Refreshed, we begin the final leg of our journey. Before heading back to Rethymno city, we’ll cross the Simma Bridge, the tallest stone bridge in Crete, an architectural marvel built with traditional craftsmanship that spans the stunning gorge of the Amari Valley.

Our loop concludes with a relaxing ride along the seafront street of Rethymno, bringing us back to our starting point, having completed a full circle around Vrisinas Mountain, filled with the memories of a day spent exploring Crete’s hidden gems.
